About From the Field
From the Field is a family-owned company based in Oakland, California and
Madagascar. We are committed to fair trade, community development, and organic
cultivation. We currently offer gourmet quality, single-origin, all-natural Bourbon
vanilla beans at competitive prices. We are also developing community partnerships
throughout Madagascar for cacao, cloves, handicrafts and essential oils.
At FTF, we connect the lives of growers with the lives of buyers-- linkages that offer
advantages for everyone. Because we at FTF work directly with growers and artisans,
we assure that only the finest products are chosen for import. We also assure single
origin shipments, providing clients with the consistency they need to produce
gourmet products from our vanilla beans and cloves.
By bypassing the middlemen usually involved in importing, FTF is able to offer rural
families significantly higher prices for their products, without passing extra costs
onto our clients. Thus, fair trade does not mean higher prices for buyers.
Our staff offers a wide range of expertise beyond importing and exporting. We have
backgrounds in anthropology, environmental science, community development,
international sustainable trade certification, and marketing.
At From the Field, we have invested years learning about the communities where we
work. Two of the founders are fluent in Malagasy-- the national language of
Madagascar and often the only one spoken in rural areas. We know how proud these
communities are of the high quality, all natural products they produce, and we at FTF
are pleased to be able to share them with people outside of Madagascar.
